Earth resources in Victoria

Miners on-site Victoria has a vibrant earth resources sector with a variety of commodities including brown coal, gold, petroleum, mineral sands and base metals, as well as emerging industries such as geothermal and geosequestration.

We support and promote investment opportunities in the sector, which includes providing cutting-edge geoscience information to help significantly reduce exploration risk. We also facilitate projects under development in the State as they navigate through approvals processes.

In addition, we maintain an efficient licensing and permitting system for exploration, resource development and operations, including for pipeline activities, and regulate the industry to ensure that environmental management standards are met.

	Geological Carbon Storage Exploration Tender Opens On 30 October 2009 the Victorian Government opened applications for exploration permits to explore for storage formations suitable for geological carbon storage in two areas within Victoria�s Gippsland Basin.
	Strzelecki Awards 2009 Winners of this year's Strzelecki awards for sustainable development in the earth resource industries were announced by the Minister for Energy and Resources Peter Batchelor on the 17th of August.
	Petroleum explorers guide to Victoria This new guide is designed to provide general information for companies considering investment in Victoria's upstream petroleum industry. It will be particularly useful for those companies that are new to working in Victoria and Australia.
	Victorian Geological Carbon Storage Initiative The four-year, $5.2 million VicGCS Initiative is researching the regional carbon dioxide (CO₂) storage capacity of the Gippsland Basin. The first VicGCS report, Geological carbon storage in the Gippsland Basin, Australia: Containment potential is now available.
	Review of minerals industry regulation We have established a broad review of the regulatory framework for the minerals industry to ensure the continued development of a sustainable and efficient earth resources sector in Victoria. An issues paper is now available.
